The Golf R is my preferred VW, and it’s always a pleasure to share this product with a potential client. Featuring 292 HP and all wheel drive (4Motion), the R offers a great combination of power on the road, with the sure footedness you want when you encounter snow/ice/water conditions.

The R starts at $40,695 plus $1625 Freight and Prep charges. From there, you can add the six speed -paddle shifting DSG Automatic Transmission- $1,400, Technology Package $1,795 (8” touch screen, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and park control), and an alloy wheel option (Pretoria) for $130. There is also an extra charge for Oryx White Pearl ($450). So, realistically there is not a huge range between the entry model and the fully equipped model.

That said, there is a lot of great standard equipment, such as 19” Cadiz Alloy Wheels, Leather Sport Seating with a 12 way power seat – the “rake” leg adjustment is particularly helpful for support. Also, the leather seats offer a ton of side support – they are typical of a high end German sports car. Of course, amenities like heated seats, dual zone climate control, keyless access, push start, 60/40 split rear seat with pass through (great for skis!), and a parking camera are all there.

Stepping up the game, the R also includes blind spot detection when changing lanes, dynamic chassis to regulate ride comfort/performance, Fender audio to truly appreciate the audiophile in all of us, and App-Connect so that your phone can easily communicate with your new wheels.

You will immediately notice how well built a VW is when you get behind the wheel. The doors are firm, and that comforting thud of the doors opening/closing gives you peace of mind. The door hinges are thick. The structure of the car features laser welding – a function that significantly improves rigidity/handling. Think about laser welding as a “zipper” jacket as opposed to buttons! Much stronger!

Interior fit/finish is top notch. The Blue accent lighting really adds an individual touch. I’ve had clients tell me that pricier BMW/Mercedes interiors appear inferior!

On the road, the R is incredibly solid feeling, and does not get blown around on the highway, it has the distinctive exhaust note typical of the GTI and really comes into its own when cornering and you can feel the 4Motion system activate.

I would be happy to show you what makes the R stand apart!
